The Orioles couldn’t begin the next series of their homestand without doing more work on their roster.

It’s become a daily occurrence.

Dean Kremer was recalled to start tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks. In a corresponding move, the Orioles optioned Cade Povich, who started yesterday and held the Giants to one run in 6 2/3 innings.

Kremer was optioned at the end of spring training and made two starts with Norfolk, allowing three runs and striking out 12 in 9 1/3 innings. He was in Baltimore yesterday and threw on the field.

The other choice with Povich was a bullpen assignment, but he’d be unavailable for an extended period. He can stay on a starter’s schedule with the Tides.

Nothing was announced regarding Ryan Mountcastle, who fractured his left foot and is expected to go on the injured list today, with infielder Jackson Holliday a possibility to be reinstated from the IL.

Perhaps today, perhaps later in the week.

Having 13 players on the IL would tie the Orioles with the Diamondbacks for most in the majors.

Mountcastle sustained his injury Saturday night after stumbling between first and second base on a double. An MRI yesterday confirmed the break in the fourth metacarpal.

The sequence began with Adley Rutschman scratched from the lineup with left ankle inflammation and Mountcastle replacing him. Rutschman went on the IL later in the day.

“Speedy and fast recovery to (Rutschman) and (Mountcastle),” said first baseman Pete Alonso. “Obviously it stinks. Those guys are really important to this club. But hopefully they get healthy, hopefully they recover very, very quickly and back sooner rather than later. But again, speedy recovery for both.”

Holliday underwent surgery in February to remove a broken right hamate bone. He’s appeared in 11 games with Triple-A Norfolk on his rehab assignment and went 7-for-42 (.167) with two doubles and a .453 OPS.

Three-fourths of the projected infield would be intact, with Jordan Westburg missing at third base. Westburg is on the 60-day IL after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow in spring training.

Holliday avoided the IL last season and played in 149 games, batting .242/.314/.375 with 21 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Kremer will be the eighth Orioles starter in 16 games. He’s 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA and 1.645 WHIP in 10 1/3 innings in two career starts against Arizona.

Corbin Carroll is 3-for-6 with a double and home run against Kremer.

The Orioles rotation has posted a 2.51 ERA since April 6, compared to 5.06 through the 5th.

Arizona right-hander Ryne Nelson, a second-round draft pick in 2019 out of the University of Oregon, has allowed seven earned runs and 12 total in three starts covering 15 innings. He held the Mets to one run in 5 2/3 innings in his last outing.

Nelson has made two appearances against the Orioles, including one start, and allowed three runs and 10 hits in 7 2/3 innings. He made a May 11, 2024 start at Camden Yards and allowed three runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3. Gunnar Henderson homered.

Pete Alonso is 5-for-11 with four home runs and eight RBIs against Nelson.

The Diamondbacks are 9-7 and in third place in the National League West, 2 ½ games behind the first-place Dodgers. Their nine home runs are second-fewest in the majors after the Giants’ eight, and their .648 OPS is 26th.

On the pitching side, their 3.63 ERA is 10th and their 1.21 WHIP is sixth. The starters’ 3.38 ERA is sixth.

The Orioles lost two of three in Arizona last April. They won two of three in Baltimore in 2024.

Catcher James McCann returns to Camden Yards for the series.
