SARASOTA, Fla. – Yovani Gallardo’s physical is expected to continue this morning. We may not get an announcement on his signing before Wednesday. I’ll let you decide whether he’s worth the wait.
Fans want to know if Dylan Bundy will surrender his No. 49 to Gallardo. Bundy doesn’t seem overly attached to it and joked with me yesterday that he’ll probably have new digits.
I suggested that he hold out for something nice in return.

Plant High School is retiring Mychal Givens’ No. 10 tonight in a ceremony at the school.

Jimmy Paredes was supposed to report to the Ed Smith Stadium complex on Saturday, but his plane had mechanical problems leaving the Dominican Republic. He arrived yesterday and had a light workout.

“They were getting ready to go down the runway in Santo Domingo and they came back. They had a problem,” said manager Buck Showalter.

“Jimmy was all worked up about it. He thought he was going to be late.”

Showalter noted yesterday how many players in camp returned to the organization on minor league deals.

“It just makes everybody feel good,” he said. “Guys like (Todd) Redmond and (Steve) Tolleson really wanted to come back. Those guys. Not that they didn’t like where they were. It’s just that they’re encouraged to be here. And they had other options.”

The two intrasquad games on Feb. 27 and 28 should move quickly with strict pitch limits. Some innings may only include one or two outs.

“Boy, I wish we could do it during the season,” Showalter said.

The first game is scheduled for five innings and the second is scheduled for seven.

“We’ll see 10 pitchers the first day and probably 15 or more the next day,” Showalter said.

Here’s a leftover comment from Kevin Gausman on the Gallardo signing and whether he followed the rumors:

“I think nowadays with Twitter and every social media outlet, it’s kind of hard not to notice things,” he said. “You take notice, but you also have to say in the back of your mind, you don’t know what’s going on with other teams.

“I usually wait until it’s official before I actually even think about it, but like I said, we’re excited to have him. We’re excited to get to know him and meet him and start pitching with him.”
