Single-A Delmarva shortstop Single-A Delmarva shortstop Manny Machado left tonight’s game against Asheville in the bottom of the first inning after injuring his left knee.
Machado was injured while running the bases in the top of the first after drawing a walk and reaching second on Kipp Schutz’s RBI single. Machado was out at third on Mike Flacco’s line drive to center field, and manager Ryan Minor made a defensive substitution before Asheville batted.
John Stockstill, the Orioles’ director of player development, said Machado is walking on his own and appears to be fine, but he’ll be examined by a doctor tomorrow morning.
“It doesn’t appear to be serious at this point,” Stockstill said, “but we won’t know for sure until tomorrow.”
Machado, the third-overall pick in last June’s draft, is batting .333 with six doubles, two triples, five homers and 21 RBIs in 26 games. He was recently named the organization’s minor league Player of the Month for April.
Update: Here’s a report on minorleaguebaseball.com, which states that Machado will undergo an MRI tomorrow once the swelling in his knee goes down. Machado was carried off the field. The Orioles sound more optimistic than this story.
