Jake Arrieta is starting today in Triple-A Norfolk’s final game of the season. The Orioles will call him up this week.
Arrieta has gone 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his last three starts, allowing four earned runs and six hits, walking eight and striking out 22 in 19 2/3 innings. Opponents are batting .095 (6-for-63) against him.
Left-hander Zach Phillips, who’s expected to have his contract selected by the Orioles, hasn’t allowed a run in 18 of his last 21 outings. He’s given up one hit over his last five appearances.
According to the Tides, 26 players have appeared in games for Norfolk and the Orioles this season: Arrieta, Phillips, Jason Berken, Zach Britton, Dana Eveland, Miguel Gonzalez, Tommy Hunter, Steve Johnson, Brian Matusz, Stu Pomeranz, J.C. Romero, Miguel Socolovich, Chris Tillman, Luis Exposito, Ronny Paulino, Andino, Ryan Flaherty, Bill Hall, Joe Mahoney, Brian Roberts, Steve Tolleson, Xavier Avery, Endy Chavez, Ford and McLouth.
NOTE: The Orioles purchased Phillips’ contract from Norfolk, as expected, to give them a third left-hander in the bullpen.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have designated pitcher Jason Berken for assignment.
Berken made one appearance with the Orioles this season, allowing two earned runs (seven total) and six hits in one inning against the Rangers. He was 5-6 with a 3.50 ERA in 26 starts with Norfolk.
The Orioles also officially recalled Tommy Hunter from Double-A Bowie.
