Though he wouldn’t confirm the names, MacPhail met with Eric Wedge (again) and Rick Dempsey.

“We had two interviews,” he said. “As always, they are informative and insightful. It’s an interesting process, not one you want to go through on a regular basis. Is it exhausting to conduct two interviews on the same day?

“It’s not really,” he said. “It’s talking baseball. It’s not exhausting at all.”

I get exhausted writing about it, but maybe that’s just me.

MacPhail wouldn’t bite when asked whether it’s becoming more likely that Juan Samuel will run the team through the remainder of the season.

“I think the energy level has picked up some since Juan has been here, and certainly the results. I think he’s 9-14,” MacPhail said. “When you consider some of those things, he’s done a good job. There are certain little keys that I look for in terms of the energy level. We have played far from flawless in a lot of respects and we certainly have a lot of work to do, but there are some things that you look for, and those signs are positive.”

So, is it more likely?

“The timetable of the managerial thing, as I’ve said, is going to be open ended,” MacPhail said. “It’s the first time going through an in-season process for me. I think once you get comfortable with a decision, you make it. But you have to get there and you have to weigh all the options and look at all the information.”

In other words, we’re still in the Group A stage.

“I would say that’s accurate,” he replied.
