Andy MacPhail talks with the media about the Birds' road trip and Saturday's starter
The O's today added righty Alfredo Simon to the roster, sending Kam Mickolio back to Triple-A.
In order to make room for Simon on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated LHP Wilfrido Perez for assignment. Perez, 25, was 0-1 with three saves and a 10.80 ERA (5.0IP, 6ER), five walks and five strikeouts in five games with Double-A Bowie.
"It's never an easy thing to take someone off the roster," MacPhail said of the move with Perez. "We've managed that reasonably well in that people we've taken off have gotten through (waivers). It gets tougher the deeper you get into it.
"We liked the spring he had, but he scuffled in season and he was probably the first guy off the list, not that we don't think he can be productive at sometime.
"It's complicated a little by the fact we claimed (Pedro) Viola. But we made the determination that Viola had more upside than Wilfrido."
MacPhail said he was uncertain if Perez could go through waivers unclaimed and remain with the team.
MacPhail was asked if the addition of Simon was the first of other moves coming to help the bullpen.
"We'll see. You've got a couple of guys on the DL, so just bringing them back could precipitate more moves."
MacPhail would not confirm that Brad Bergesen will return to the O's to make Saturday's start but sounded as if that was the plan.
"We have a pretty good idea how we are going to approach that. I don't see anything impacting that. We are pretty consistent with the approach we will take."
