Corey Patterson walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth, stolen second, took third on catcher Jason Kendall’s throwing error and scored on Ty Wigginton’s slow roller to second base.
Orioles 2, Kansas City 2.
That’s how you manufacture a run.
Now here’s how it could have gone a little smoother:
Patterson didn’t immediately go back and tag on Nick Markakis’ liner to right field. David DeJesus made a lunging catch and scrambled to his feet before firing the ball to the plate.

Patterson didn’t immediately go back and tag on Nick Markakis’ liner to right field. David DeJesus made a lunging catch and scrambled to his feet before firing the ball to the plate.
By the time Patterson tagged up, it was too late. He had to slam on the brakes and go back as the throw arrived to Kendall.
Markakis was cheated out of another RBI, similar to what happened Friday night when Adam Jones didn’t come home on a grounder to first.
Wigginton actually glanced at Patterson as he ran to first on his grounder, making sure the Orioles’ new leadoff hitter was coming home. It drew a laugh in the press box.
A few of us also noted that Patterson has walked in back-to-back games. I suggested that they’d stop tonight’s game for a brief ceremony if the weather wasn’t so bad.
Instant update: That didn’t take long. The Royals lead, 3-2, heading to the bottom of the sixth. Miguel Tejada momentarily bobbled a bases-loaded bouncer from Yuniesky Betancourt with one out, eliminating any chance at a double play. He looked home before throwing to first.
