With Chris Davis still on the free agent market, Trumbo is the favorite to be the Orioles first baseman on opening day. He also can play the outfield and should get some at-bats as the designated hitter.
The Orioles prefer his defense at first base over the outfield.
Negotiations on new contracts continue with the representatives for Brad Brach, Zach Britton, Ryan Flaherty, Miguel Gonzalez, Manny Machado, Brian Matusz and Chris Tillman. The sides will exchange figures on Friday if agreements aren’t reached, and hearings will be set up beginning next month.
The Orioles signed two other arbitration-eligible players, pitcher Vance Worley and outfielder Nolan Reimold, on Dec. 2. They non-tendered infielder Paul Janish and outfielder David Lough.
Janish agreed to terms on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. His contract includes an opt-out clause.
ESPN.com first reported Trumbo’s deal.
