Jorge Mateo has returned to the lineup tonight as the Orioles try to extend their winning streak to five games. However, manager Brandon Hyde said he’s reconsidering because of the wet conditions.
Rain is falling at Camden Yards, but Hyde said, “As of now, we’re playing.”
Mateo is listed at shortstop and batting sixth. Austin Hays is leading off, with Cedric Mullins lowered again to ninth against Tigers left-hander Joey Wentz.
Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter. Ramón Urías is playing third base.
Kyle Gibson has a 4.18 ERA and 1.268 WHIP in four starts. He’s 10-11 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.577 WHIP in 25 career games (24 starts) against the Tigers.
The Orioles have won eight of their last 10 games and are five above .500. They moved into second place in the American League East.
Mullins has reached base in eight consecutive games. He’s 11-for-26 (.423) during that stretch, with two doubles, a triple, seven RBIs, nine walks and four stolen bases.
Gunnar Henderson has reached base in his last 11 starts. He’s on the bench tonight.
Adam Frazier, who’s starting at second base, recorded his fourth career walk-off plate appearance last night and his first since an 11th-inning home run with the Pirates in 2018.
Wentz is 0-2 this season with a 6.39 ERA and 1.342 WHIP in three starts. He’s allowed nine runs and 11 hits with six walks in 12 2/3 innings.
Wentz made seven starts last year as a rookie and posted a 3.03 ERA and 1.102 WHIP with two home runs allowed in 32 2/3 innings. He faced the Orioles on Sept. 20 at Camden Yards and got the win after shutting them out on two hits for 5 2/3 innings.
Miguel Cabrera is 10-for-38 with three doubles, a home run and eight RBIs against Gibson.
Former Oriole Tyler Nevin is the Tigers’ designated hitter tonight.
Last night’s game was played in two hours and 25 minutes, the shortest at Camden Yards this season.
