Today is the six-year anniversary of Wieters’ debut with the Orioles. He hasn’t played for them since May 10, 2014 and hasn’t caught since May 4. Wieters underwent ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow on June 17.
Manager Buck Showalter said there are no physical restrictions on Wieters that would require the Orioles to carry three catchers.
Kevin Gausman threw 32 pitches today while facing Wieters, Steve Clevenger and Everth Cabrera. He used all of his pitches and said his right shoulder felt great.
Gausman will throw a bullpen session on Sunday and a two-inning simulated game on Tuesday in Houston. He’s expected to pitch on June 6 for Norfolk or Frederick.
“I know Kevin thinks we’re being a little overcautious with him,” Showalter said.
Showalter will meet with pitcher Bud Norris today before deciding where the right-hander will pitch. Norris could make one more start with a minor league affiliate before coming off the disabled list.
The Orioles came close to bringing up a reliever. Showalter said all seven bullpen arms are available tonight, but there are a few he’d rather not use.
Showalter said the ability to add another reliever will be easier after tonight’s game if needed.
Minor league catcher Jonah Heim will undergo surgery on his foot.
