“I didn’t feel like I struggled in the first, I just made some bad pitches. The home run ball was up. But I felt like I had good stuff. I was in a good rhythm today. “Deep down I knew I had to grind my way through it and say these are the only runs they’ll get today. I had some easy innings later on and that kept my pitch count down.”

Matusz gave up six hits and four runs over seven innings and is now 4-2, 5.26.

After throwing 19 pitches in the first inning, he needed just 74 to get through the next six frames.

“We came out swinging the bats well today, so I knew we’d be in the game if I put up some zeros. Melvin Mora came up clutch today.”

Matusz, who threw 93 pitches, said he often gets better as the game goes on. He said he threw some of his best changeups all year today.

He also said he didn’t feel tired right now or like a pitcher who may need to be soon shut down.

“I love pitching so much, I don’t ever want to stop. I feel great right now. I feel strong and in great condition. The right thing to do is watch the innings, but I never want to stop throwing. I’m just starting to get comfortable out there and into good grooves. But the decision is up to Andy MacPhail and Dave Trembley.”
