Matusz has struck out six batters, raising his spring total to 11 in 10 2/3 innings. His changeup has been especially impressive. He’s thrown 51 pitches, including 34 for strikes.
Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano has held the Orioles to one hit through the third, Vladimir Guerrero’s bouncing single to center field leading off the second inning.
Jake Fox made a nice play at first base to end the second inning, bare-handing the ball after it deflected off the bag. It took a high bounce, and Fox snatched it above his head.
Fox already was in a good mood after his Michigan Wolverines beat Tennessee by 30 points in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. He asked for the score while waiting to step into the cage for batting practice.
Update: Matusz went 4 2/3 innings and allowed one run and six hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts. He came out with a runner on base and two outs after throwing 80 pitches, 54 for strikes. Guerrero’s second single of the night, also to center field in the fourth, tied the game, 1-1.
