Left-hander T.J. McFarland has been scratched from tonight’s scheduled start for Triple-A Norfolk. He was supposed to take the mound in Louisville, but may be headed to St. Petersburg, Fla., where the Orioles begin a three-game series Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
Nick Additon is taking McFarland’s turn tonight.
The Orioles optioned McFarland to Norfolk on April 25 to create room for infielder Jemile Weeks. He must stay down for 10 days unless replacing an injured player, and that period ends on Tuesday.
The starters have failed to complete six innings in four of the last five games, Ubaldo Jimenez providing the lone exception Friday night in Minnesota. They’ve failed to complete six innings in 10 of the last 16 games, placing a burden on the bullpen that obviously concerns manager Buck Showalter.
If McFarland is officially recalled, the Orioles could option an infielder and go with a 13-man pitching staff, which they’ve done previously this season.
McFarland has made two appearances with the Orioles, allowing one run and five hits in four innings. He’s 0-1 with a 3.44 ERA in four starts with Norfolk, with 19 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings.
Update: First baseman Brett Wallace also has been scratched from Norfolk’s lineup. However, David Hall of the Virginian-Pilot said Wallace may be ill.
