McFarland no longer is a candidate to start Wednesday night against the Padres unless he’s replacing an injured player.
This is the third time that McFarland has been sent down to Norfolk this season.
Odrisamer Despaigne and Dylan Bundy must serve as the long relievers in the bullpen. Vance Worley remains on the disabled list with a strained groin muscle.
Despaigne is a candidate to start Wednesday night.
McFarland’s departure leaves the Orioles with two left-handers in the bullpen – closer Zach Britton and Brian Duensing. Duensing threw 11 pitches last night.
With Manny Machado’s suspension looming, the Orioles chose to keep infielders Ryan Flaherty and Paul Janish on the 25-man roster. Janish is out of options and would have to be designated for assignment.
