The Orioles strengthened their bench this afternoon in Detroit by recalling outfielder Ryan McKenna from Triple-A Norfolk and optioning reliever Denyi Reyes to the Tides.
Reyes made his major league debut last night and tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
McKenna was 5-for-19 with two doubles with the Orioles. He had a three-homer game with Norfolk and was 9-for-33.
The move gives the Orioles a four-man bench again, though Austin Hays isn’t available due to the lacerations on his left hand sustained Thursday in St. Louis.
McKenna is playing left field today and batting seventh.
Ramón Urías is in the lineup for the first time since the Orioles scratched him Tuesday due to abdominal soreness. He’s batting cleanup for the first time in his career, and he’s starting at third base.
Jorge Mateo and his nine-game hitting streak are on the bench. Chris Owings is playing shortstop.
Tyler Nevin is the first baseman again with Ryan Mountcastle on the injured list.
Trey Mancini and Anthony Santander hit back-to-back home runs last night in a 4-2 loss to the Tigers.
Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann is making his seventh start. He’s carrying a 2.67 ERA and 1.187 WHIP with only one home run allowed in 30 1/3 innings.
The Baltimore native has surrendered two earned runs or fewer in five of six starts. He’s never faced the Tigers.
The Orioles are familiar with Michael Pineda, who’s making his 16th career start against them. He’s 6-4 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.230 WHIP and 96 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings.
Pineda has made four starts for the Tigers and allowed eight runs in 21 innings.
Rougned Odor is 1-for-11 with six strikeouts against Pineda.
