Kevin Gausman is not usually a reliever, but he came through tonight out of the ‘pen. And the Orioles rallied to beat the Yankees 4-3 in front of 40,041 at Camden Yards.

After the Yankees scored three runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings off starter T.J. McFarland, Gausman came on the third and shut down the Yankees after that to get his first major league win.

After the Yankees scored three runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings off starter T.J. McFarland, Gausman came on the third and shut down the Yankees after that to get his first major league win.

McLouth delivered what turned out to be a game-winning homer when he hit one out to right off Sabathia to put the Orioles ahead 4-3 in the last of the seventh.

It was McLouth’s third homer in just 44 at-bats against left-handed pitching and he has just two in 220 at-bats versus right-handers.

Down 3-0 and without a hit through five innings, the Orioles rallied to score twice in the sixth against Sabathia. McLouth led off the inning with a single to end the no-hit bid and an Alexi Casilla infield single followed.

With one out in the sixth, Manny Machado crushed a two-run double to right center to cut the Yankees’ lead to 3-2. It was his major league-leading 37th double coming in the season’s 81st game. Only two players have ever had that many or more through 81 team games: Earl Webb (37 in 1931) and Edgar Martinez (41 in 1996).

When J.J. Hardy flied out to center, Machado tagged up and hustled to third base with two outs. That was an important 90 feet of real estate, since he scored the tie run on an Adam Jones infield single.

Gausman went 4 1/3 innings and allowed just three singles with no walks and four strikeouts, throwing 55 pitches. His fastball touched 99 mph on the stadium radar gun. Gausman’s outing was even more impressive because he had not pitched since June 19, when he went six innings for Triple-A Norfolk.

Tommy Hunter earned a six-out save and ended this game with a flourish, getting two strikeouts and a groundout from Robinson Cano to end the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Orioles are now 13-8 in their last 21 regular season games against the Yankees and they hit the season’s midpoint with a record of 45-36.
