Orioles pitcher John Means has been placed on the 10-day injured list this morning with a left shoulder strain and rookie left-hander Zac Lowther replaces him on the active roster.

Lowther has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and provides a fresh arm in the bullpen for today’s series finale versus the Indians.

The Orioles also put Means on the IL with the same injury back in 2019. He began the 2020 season on the IL with shoulder fatigue.

There are two off-days later this week, which allows manager Brandon Hyde to reduce the rotation to four starters. Means conceivably could miss only one start.

The Orioles recalled Lowther on Wednesday, but he didn’t pitch and was sent back to Norfolk. He’s allowed seven runs and eight hits in two appearances with the Orioles spanning 3 1/3 innings.

Lowther is eligible to return early because he’s replacing an injured player. He hasn’t pitched for the Tides since May 26, making him available today in long relief behind starter Jorge López.

López has completed six innings in back-to-back starts and allowed four runs and nine hits in 12 innings.

López has made 10 career appearances against the Indians, including one start, and allowed 15 earned runs (17 total) and 21 hits in 15 innings.

Cedric Mullins joined Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson as the only Orioles to go 5-for-5 or better with at least two home runs in a game.

Outfielder Austin Hays did some running and mobility drills this morning, including sprints from third base to the plate, to test his left hamstring. He’s expected to go on an injury rehab assignment early in the week and be activated by the end of it.

Indians right-hander Cal Quantrill, the eighth overall section by the Padres in the 2016 draft out of Stanford University, is making his 19th appearance and second start this season. He’s carrying a 2.08 ERA and 1.286 WHIP in 30 1/3 innings with only two home runs surrendered.

Quantrill made his only career appearance against the Orioles on June 26, 2019 with the Padres and allowed a run with one hit and three walks in 2/3 of an inning at Camden Yards. Stevie Wilkerson drew a bases-loaded walk.

He’s the son of former major league pitcher Paul Quantrill.
