Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations, sat down with a few team executives and player representatives today and said he had two or three meetings lined up later tonight. He isn't close to making a deal, which means the Orioles aren't a mystery team in the Matt Lindstrom or Edwin Jackson talks. MacPhail had a brief, informal meeting with Mark Hendrickson's agent, Joe Urbon, but he hasn't met with Mark Pieper, who represents Erik Bedard. However, MacPhail and Pieper will meet soon to discuss Bedard and "a variety of players." The club's physicians are reviewing Bedard's medical records to determine how long he'll be sidelined after undergoing a second shoulder surgery. They're also checking the records of other, unidentified free agents. Earlier today, manager Dave Trembley said the following about Bedard: "I had a very good relationship with Erik. I think like anything else, you'd like to find out as much as you can where he's at health-wise and go from there. You need to know that a guy can be counted on to pitch every fifth day. He's coming off a shoulder issue. His name's on the board, just like there's a lot of other guys on the board. And that's one of the first things people look at, where are these guys medically. We're not in a position to get a guy and he's not ready to pitch until June. If we're going to get a guy, we need to get a guy who's going to pitch at the beginning of the year." MacPhail confirmed that he'd be willing to trade for a pitcher who has only one year remaining on his contract, though he wasn't necessarily referring to Kevin Millwood. There's a buzz here that the Orioles' interest in Millwood has picked up, but it's difficult to know what to believe. At least for now, MacPhail doesn't regard having Nolan Reimold, Felix Pie and Luke Scott on the roster as being a logjam. The Orioles haven't held any discussions concerning John Lackey and don't have any plans to do so. And there's nothing on the immediate agenda concerning the Marlins and Dan Uggla. MacPhail would prefer not to surrender a draft pick in exchange for signing at Type A player, but it's not an insurmountable obstacle. Catching isn't a high priority, but MacPhail said the position isn't closed.
