The Orioles are doing more work on the structure of their front office while also trying to sneak into the playoffs as the third Wild Card.
A source confirmed today that Sig Mejdal no longer is overseeing the Orioles’ analytics department. Mejdal instead will manage the research of emerging technologies and innovative practices across baseball operations.
Mejdal, who was brought into the organization by president of baseball operations Mike Elias in 2018, retains his title of assistant general manager.
Elias rebuilt the Orioles’ analytics department, which previously consisted of three employees and was criticized for lacking modernization and influence, and turned it an integral component of the rebuild.
Mejdal was his first hire.
“Sig Mejdal is one of the most experienced and accomplished analysts working in baseball today,” Elias said in a press release announcing the hire. “To have him join our Orioles organization is a major moment for this franchise, and I look forward to him charting the course for all of our forthcoming efforts in the analytics space.”
Mejdal’s baseball career began in 2005 when the Cardinals hired him as a quantitative analyst, a massive professional shift from his work as an engineer and biomathematician for Lockheed Martin and NASA.
This is the latest change to the Orioles’ front office, with more possibly to come. Vice president of player and staff development Matt Blood left the organization earlier this month.
A new head of analytics could be hired.
The Orioles begin tonight three games back for the last Wild Card with nine remaining. Three teams are ahead of them, and the Guardians hold the tiebreaker after relinquishing first place to the White Sox in the American League Central.
The Athletic first reported Mejdal’s new duties.
