Chen is so good, he stops both teams from hitting.

The Orioles have scored just 31 runs (2.07 per game) in the 15 games that Chen has been charged with the loss, and 92 runs (5.11 per game) in the 18 games when he recorded a win.

Before today, Chen had held opponents to a .192 average (24-for-125) with runners on base, the third-lowest average among American League starters behind Clay Buchholz (.139) and Chris Archer (.163).

The Orioles continue to lead 1-0 today. That’s it. They’re 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. They put two on with none out in the top of the sixth against Giants reliever Guillermo Moscoso and couldn’t score.

Or they just refused. If I’m Chen, I’m that paranoid.

Before Andres Torres led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, Chen had retired 13 in a row and faced only one batter above the minimum. Brandon Belt singled with two outs in the first inning.

Then, he felt so guilty, he threw the ball into Nate McLouth’s back on an attempted force, which led to the game’s only run on Adam Jones’ sacrifice fly.

Jones extended his hitting streak to eight games today. He’s 15-for-30 with three doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and seven runs scored.

Nick Markakis is 2-for-3 today, making him 7-for-12 in his career as the No. 5 hitter.

But who’s counting?

Update: So much for Chen cruising.

The Giants scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 3-1. Marco Scutaro had an RBI single, and Hunter Pence doubled in two runs with the bases loaded and two outs.

Chen walked Buster Posey intentionally with first base open, and Pence lined a 91 mph fastball into the right field corner.

Chen threw 52 pitches through five innings. He threw 20 in the sixth, and now he’s done. Brian Roberts is pinch-hitting for him.

It goes down as a quality start, for what that’s worth.

Who’s going to be the first fan to suggest that Showalter stayed with Chen too long?

Update II: Chris Davis hit a 448-foot home run leading off the top of the eighth to reduce the Giants’ lead to 3-2.

Davis has 42 home runs and 109 RBIs this season.

Davis (59) and Jones (53) are the only pair of teammates in the American League to each have at least one RBI in 50 or more games this year.

Update III: Henry Urrutia led off the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit single off Sergio Romo, but the Orioles couldn’t push across the tying run and lost to the Giants 3-2.

The winning streak ends at three games.

Darren O’Day struck out the side in the eighth inning.

The Orioles are 14-18 in one-run games and 42-21 when they score first.

Markakis went 3-for-4 and is 8-for-13 in his career as the No. 5 hitter. The Orioles finished 0-for-8 with RISP.
