Morton start pushed back due to elbow tendinitis, Mateo and Povich shut down

ARLINGTON, Texas – The injury updates for the Orioles create a health spray chart.

The bad news today seemed to override the good.

* Zach Eflin was placed on the 15-day injured list this afternoon, as expected, with tightness in his lower back.

* Brandon Young was recalled, as expected, but he’s starting Tuesday night against the Rangers because Charlie Morton has a mild case of tendinitis in his right elbow. Morton is pushed back to Friday night in Atlanta.

* Jordan Westburg could be available tonight after hitting in the cage earlier today to test his sore left index finger. The club is hoping that Westburg returns to the lineup Tuesday or Wednesday.

* Jorge Mateo was pulled from his injury rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk due to hamstring soreness that forced him out of yesterday’s game. Mateo is on the IL with a sore left elbow.

* Cade Povich was pulled from his rehab assignment with the Tides due to left hip soreness, which is the reason why he’s on the IL.

* Tyler O’Neill is moving up from Double-A Chesapeake to Norfolk on his assignment, and he could be reinstated during the road trip.

Young was able to return before the minimum 15 days because he’s replacing an injured player. However, he wasn’t expected to also be replacing Morton in Tuesday night’s game.

Morton faced the Rangers in his last start and allowed three runs in five innings while throwing 100 pitches. He allowed a combined one run over 11 innings in his previous two outings and also held the White Sox to an unearned run in 6 2/3 on June 1.

Morton has registered a 2.68 ERA in his last nine appearances.

Interim manager Tony Mansolino described the tendinitis as “very low grade.”

“We’re just gonna push him back a couple games,” Mansolino said. “All indications are that he’s gonna be fine, but we’ll throw B.Y. tomorrow. He’ll start. And then we’re planning on Charlie starting in Atlanta Friday night.”

Young will be making his fourth major league start. He’s 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.974 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings. And he’ll oppose Jacob deGrom again. Young allowed four runs in four innings Wednesday at Camden Yards, and deGrom carried a no-hitter into the eighth.

The Orioles don’t know how long they’ll be without Eflin, who missed a month earlier this season with a right lat strain. He began experiencing the stiffness in his lower back while warming for his previous start, which lasted one inning.

“We’re kind of still sorting through everything right now,” Mansolino said. “It’s hard to be optimistic or not be optimistic until we get all the information.”

Westburg hit in the cage earlier today, rested for 30-40 minutes and took more swings.

“Everything went well,” Mansolino said. “Not in the starting lineup tonight. He will be available. We’ll just have to make the decision at the point in the game if we’ll use him or not. You’re just gonna wrestle with the idea, if you use him, are you risking him? I’ve still got to go talk to him a little bit and talk to the medical side, but there’s a possibility he will be available tonight.

“If not, then we will probably make a decision on whether he’ll be in the lineup Tuesday. And if not, I would really expect to see him in there Wednesday.”

Westburg sprained the finger in New York and aggravated it Friday night while diving into second base.

“I am thankful it was less,” he said. “Still not 100 percent. I doubt that it’s gonna be 100 percent for a while. But look, I told you the last time that it was good enough. That’s all I’m looking for right now. So I’m hoping it’s just another day or two and I can be back in the lineup. But no promises. I’m not a doctor. I don’t know how these things go. I don’t understand my body quite yet and how quickly it heals. Sometimes slowly.

“I just want to be back on the field and whenever that time is, I’ll be thankful.”

Instincts took over again when Westburg dived into the bag on a first-inning double and jammed the finger.

“Yeah, I’ve had a lot of conversations about going head first,” he said. “I think in my mind there’s some advantages to it. Obviously, disadvantage is you put yourself more at risk for injuries. I’m gonna try to cut some of that out. It’s hard, though. Been playing the game hard for 20-some odd years of my life. That’s how I know I’ve played the game, and those instincts kick in and it’s hard to override those sometimes.

“I was mid-air the other day, knowing like it’s probably gonna hurt. Sure enough, it did. I’m not trying to hurt myself out there and I’m not trying to make bad decisions. Sometimes those instincts just kick in, and I’m gonna have to do a better job when I get back on the field to try to override those.”

O’Neill has recovered from his left shoulder impingement and he’s 3-for-15 with a home run with Chesapeake. He experienced a setback earlier but is nearing a return. He hasn’t played for the Orioles since May 15 and was 1-for-23 in his last eight games.

“T.O. is gonna be in Norfolk,” Mansolino said. “I think we’re probably getting closer to seeing him. I think there’s a chance we see him on this road trip at some point. Just kind of depends on how his body feels.”

Mateo is trending the other way. He went 1-for-4 yesterday before soreness in his hamstring led to Terrin Vavra replacing him at shortstop. He's 6-for-13 with a home run.

“We are evaluating it right now,” Mansolino said. “Running down the base, I think it was late in the game, trying to beat out a single, pulled his hamstring. We don’t know the severity of it.”

Povich is shut down after making one start with the Tides.

“There’s a little bit of soreness in the hip,” Mansolino said. “We’re also kind of going through the process on that and trying to figure out the next best steps for him.”

Texas native Grayson Rodriguez made the trip and was throwing in the outfield earlier today.
