CLEARWATER, Fla. – Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle expects to be in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Pirates in Bradenton after being hit on the right hand Wednesday by a 90 mph sinker.
Mountcastle said this morning that he’s fine and wasn’t scheduled to play today. The hand isn’t the reason why he stayed back in Sarasota.
X-rays on Wednesday came back negative for a fracture.
“All good, all good,” he said. “It just hit the side of my hand, and once I could move it I knew it was fine.
“I was coming out anyway, so just get some treatment on it before got out of there.”
The Orioles are on the road again, making another long trip, but nothing compared to the east side of the state.
Left-hander Cade Povich gets the start against the Phillies in Clearwater, his third this spring. He shut out the Braves over two innings and allowed one run and one hit in 3 2/3 innings against the Twins.
Povich registered nine groundball outs against the Twins before his removal at 53 pitches.
Jeremiah Jackson is starting at second base today, his first time in the lineup since March 5. Heston Kjerstad is leading off and playing left field, followed by first baseman Pete Alonso and catcher Samuel Basallo.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. is in center field after returning from the World Baseball Classic.
Also pitching today are Tyler Wells, Yennier Cano, Jackson Kowar and Grant Wolfram.
Outfielders Vance Honeycutt, Nate George and Ike Irish and infielders Wehiwa Aloy and Griff O’Ferrall are on the trip.
The Phillies are starting right-hander Andrew Painter. He’s made two starts this spring and tossed five scoreless innings with only one hit.
MLB Pipeline and Baseball America rank Painter, the 13th overall pick in the 2021 draft, as the No. 2 prospect in the system. MLB Pipeline also has Painter as the No. 28 prospect in baseball.
