“It’s been tough, but you’ve got to keep working. Try to get good pitches to hit. You go through things like that, sort of think too much. It kind of gets in your head and you think too much at the plate, instead of going up there getting a pitch and do what you do.

“I feel good, but there’s a lot more work to go. I’ve got to take quality at-bats every single time. When I take pitches that I should take, I know I’m feeling good at the plate. Hits are great, you want to get hits and contribute, but my takes really tell me a lot.”

Johnson also was happy for Brian Matusz, who had his own streak that needed breaking.

“It was great,” Johnson said. “He’s been pitching well and he should have had that win last time and I (messed) up that ball. And he’s throwing so well, you never want to make errors, so this is awesome for him and I’m extremely happy for Buck (Showalter). Not a lot of people have done it, so I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Down on the farm, Chris Tillman took the loss for Triple-A Norfolk after allowing four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts. He threw 93 pitches, 58 for strikes.

Tillman is 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA.

Stu Pomeranz, recently promoted to Norfolk, didn’t allow a hit or run in 2 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six.
