Miguel Gonzalez will move into the bullpen and back up starter Kevin Gausman on Wednesday afternoon at Camden Yards.
Gonzalez’s relief role is a temporary move, according to manager Buck Showalter, who confirmed that left-hander Wei-Yin Chen will start Thursday night’s series opener in Kansas City.
Chris Tillman has been bothered with some discomfort in his groin, but he’s expected to be fine. The Orioles will re-evaluate him after his bullpen session.
The uncertainty surrounding Tillman is one reason why Gausman is here. Also, the Orioles are waiting to find out whether Major League Baseball will suspend Bud Norris following last night’s ejection and his presence in the dugout while the inning continued.
Showalter said the Orioles haven’t heard from the commissioner’s office and he doesn’t anticipate a punishment.
Showalter was told that outfielder Henry Urrutia’s sports hernia surgery was successful. Urrutia is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
Dylan Bundy threw 20 pitches in today’s live bullpen session and his fastball touched 93 mph, an impressive jump in velocity. Bundy used all of his pitches.
Johan Santana’s next extended spring training start is scheduled for Friday afternoon. Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, on the disabled list with a knee injury, will throw four innings Wednesday in Sarasota.
Outfielder Nolan Reimold is performing all baseball activities in Sarasota. He’s eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list on May 29.
Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar will have his knee checked by Dr. David W. Altchek on Thursday in New York. He’s the Mets team physician.
Veteran reliever Luis Ayala will report to Double-A Bowie.
