The Orioles have been consulting with the Baltimore Police Department regarding safety issues in the city and will continue to do so throughout the night. They intend to begin their three-game series tonight against the White Sox.
Players were watching the televised coverage in the clubhouse this afternoon as protesters threw rocks and bottles at police officers at Mondawmin Mall.
“I’m not oblivious to what’s going on,” said manager Buck Showalter, “but I’m trying to keep our guys focused.”
Showalter added that if the Orioles need to make an adjustment, “we will.”
Matt Wieters caught four innings today at extended spring training and no one attempted to steal against him. He also had two at-bats and could catch again on Tuesday.
Hunter Harvey threw a 35-pitch bullpen session today, and is scheduled to work two innings Friday at extended spring training.
Showalter received excellent reports on Steve Johnson at Triple-A Norfolk and said, “He’s a good option for us.”
Showalter said he still believes that Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia can remain in the bullpen for now without putting other relievers “in harm’s way” from overuse.
Jimmy Paredes took ground balls at shortstop this afternoon before batting practice and has also worked out at first base.
Asked whether he knew that Paredes would be this good at the plate, Showalter quipped, “Exactly. I thought he was going to hit .600.”
