O's game blog: Bundy on mound as O's go for series win

TORONTO - The ballpark in Toronto, now Rogers Centre and once known as Skydome, has at times over the years been a house of horrors for the Orioles.

But with a win today, the Orioles will have back-to-back series wins here. They took two of three in this ballpark last September and have taken two of the first three in this series. The Orioles lead the division at 7-3 by a 1/2-game over New York, while Toronto resides in last place at 2-9, already 5 1/2 games behind.

Dylan-Bundy-gray-sidebar.jpgOn the mound this afternoon, O's right-hander Dylan Bundy (1-1, 2.70 ERA) pitches against Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ (0-2, 5.40).

This is a rematch from the game April 5 in Baltimore. Happ allowed three runs over seven innings, but Bundy out-pitched him. He broke out his slider that night and went seven innings allowing four hits and one run with no walks and eight strikeouts. In his second 2017 start on Tuesday at Boston, he went 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs.

Lefty batters are hitting .250 (3-for-12) in those two starts versus Bundy. Right-handed batters are hitting .235 (8-for-34), and he has allowed just one hit in eight opponent at-bats (.125) when pitching with runners in scoring position.

In five career games (one start) against Toronto, Bundy is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.77. He has pitched 11 2/3 innings and permitted just six hits and one run with a .154 average against.

The 34-year-old Happ lost just four games in 2016, but has two losses already this season. He went 20-4 with a 3.18 ERA last year.

Happ was among the major league wins leaders last season:
22 - Rick Porcello, Boston
20 - J.A. Happ, Toronto and Max Scherzer, Washington
19 - Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs

The 34-year-old Happ set career highs in 2016 in wins, innings and strikeouts, and posted his lowest ERA since 2009. He became Toronto's first 20-game winner since Roy Halladay in 2008.

More notes on the Orioles and Toronto:

* The Orioles have gone without a homer in five games this year, including yesterday. They are 2-3 in those games. The Birds have scored three runs or less in six of 10 games.

* After getting just one quality start over the first five games, O's pitchers have four in the last five contests. In the three games here this weekend, Kevin Gausman, Wade Miley and Alec Asher combined to pitch 18 1/3 innings, allowing 13 hits and five runs for an ERA of 2.45.

* The Orioles are 4-1 in one-run games and 2-0 in two-run games.

* Kendrys Morales' homer in the last of the ninth Saturday provided Toronto its first walk-off win of the 2017 season. It was the club's first walk-off homer in the regular season since June 10, 2016. That was hit by Edwin Encarnacion and that was also against the Orioles.

* Toronto's 1-9 start (before the win Saturday) is tied for the worst 10-game start ever by a club that made the playoffs the previous season. The only other team to start 1-9 after a playoff season is the 1998 Marlins. They won the World Series in 1997.

* Jonathan Schoop drove in the Orioles' only run Saturday with a sac fly in the ninth. He doubled earlier in the game. Over his last four games, Schoop is 7-for-14 with three doubles, two homers and five RBIs.

* Trey Mancini slugged two home runs Wednesday against the Red Sox, giving him five home runs in his first 10 career games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only active player with as many home runs as Mancini through his first 10 games was Colorado's Trevor Story, who holds the MLB record with seven homers.
