Buck Showalter updates the media on some injuries and talks about the O's 9-7 win
Brian Roberts was hit with a thrown ball in the first inning and left in the sixth with a left shin contusion. Hernandez left when he suffered a left ankle sprain on a play at the plate. Matusz had allowed 18 runs and 19 hits over 13 innings in his previous four starts. But tonight, he pitched out of two early jams and allowed just one run over six innings, improving to 4-11, 5.26. The Angels were just one for 10 against him when batting with runners in scoring position. The O's scored three in the 2nd, one in the 3rd and five in the 4th vs. LA's Ervin Santana, who had his shortest start of the year. He gave season highs in hits (12) and runs (9) over 3 2/3 innings. Santana, a ten-game winner, went 2-2, 2.89 in July and entered tonight with the third-best road ERA in the AL at 2.73. The Angels, who have now lost 10 of 13 games, fall under the .500 mark at 54-55. The O's, who are now 20-33 at home, are also 2-0 vs. the Angels after going 2-8 vs. the team last season.
