For the second game in a row, Matt Wieters turned around a pretty good fastball to produce a big hit that put the Orioles ahead. It led to another win.

Mark Trumbo and Wieters homered in the bottom of the seventh to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead and the Orioles went on to a 4-1 victory tonight over Kansas City at Camden Yards.

Kansas City lefty Danny Duffy had blanked the Orioles on eight strikeouts over six innings with an assortment of fastballs and changeups. But Trumbo led off the seventh with homer No. 19 on a 1-1 pitch at 94 mph. Two batters later, Wieters made it 2-1 when he crushed a 96 mph fastball 439 feet to center field. Wieters has eight RBIs over his last 14 at-bats. The O’s lead grew to 3-1 on an Adam Jones RBI double in that inning. Trumbo began today tied for the AL lead in homers and has now hit 13 his last 32 games.

When Manny Machado hit a blast to left off Kelvin Herrera in the eighth, that made it a 4-1 lead. It was No. 15 for Machado and gave the Orioles a three-homer night. They have hit 46 homers the last 27 games and 83 for the season.

Meanwhile, Orioles right-hander Mike Wright took a very nice step forward tonight, pitching well five days after he lasted just 2 2/3 innings and had given up seven hits, six runs and four homers against the Boston Red Sox. It led to his being optioned to Triple-A Norfolk last Thursday. A day later he was back on the roster when Darren O’Day needed to go on the disabled list.

Tonight he took a shutout into the seventh and gave up a run that inning on second baseman Jonathan Schoop’s throwing error. Schoop was trying to turn a double play but instead spiked the ball right into Chelsor Cuthbert sliding into second as a run scored and Cuthbert would have to leave the game with a right elbow contusion.

Wright went seven innings to tie a season-high and gave up five hits and the one unearned run. He walked two, fanned four and threw 95 pitches to improve to 3-3 with an ERA of 5.14. Tonight, Wright went seven innings or more without allowing an earned run for the first time since his first two big league starts last year on May 17 and May 23. He threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of 27 batters and the Orioles are now 7-3 in his 10 starts this season.

The Orioles have won five of six games to improve to 22-11 at home, 5-3 on this homestand, 2-2 versus Kansas City and to 33-23 overall for the season. Kansas City has lost five in a row to fall to 30-27. The Royals have scored just seven runs during the losing streak.

On Tuesday night, right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6, 6.59 ERA) pitches for the Orioles against right-hander Yordano Ventura (4-3, 4.82 ERA).
