Garcia had thrown only 11 of his first 21 pitches for strikes. Luke Scott singled with one out in the second and Adam Jones walked on four pitches.

Rally time.

Or so you’d think.

Mark Reynolds swung at the first two pitches and flied to right, extending his slump to 0-for-21. Matt Wieters walked on four pitches, but Cesar Izturis struck out on three.

End of rally time.

Reynolds hasn’t driven in a run since April 15 in Cleveland.

“I thought he was close a couple of times,” manager Buck Showalter said before the game. “The run production will be there. It’ll be there over the course of the year. There will be times where it won’t look aesthetically pleasing.

“I’m not a good fan of someone who says, ‘Well, my numbers will be there.’ Mark doesn’t say that. He’s trying to make it happen every day. And as long as he’s trying like he is and working hard at it and not giving in, then he’s got my full support.”

Update: Scott is 2-for-2. He has the only hits off Garcia. Reynolds lined to left with two outs and Scott on first base, making him 0-for-22 since his last hit.

The Yankees scored again in the fifth when shortstop Cesar Izturis had trouble getting the ball out of his glove on a grounder by Alex Rodriguez that should have produced an inning-ending double play. Curtis Granderson scored while the Orioles settled for the force at second, increasing the lead to 3-0.

Arrieta has a career-high eight strikeouts through the fifth.
