The Orioles got back down to 11 players on the injured list by reinstating outfielder Tyler O’Neill and reliever Andrew Kittredge earlier today.
O’Neill was on the seven-day concussion IL after becoming dehydrated at home, passing out and hitting his head. He hasn’t played since April 8 in Chicago.
O’Neill was 5-for-13 in his last four games and is batting .241/.353/.345 (7-for-29) with a home run in 10 games.
Kittredge came down with right shoulder inflammation in spring training and hasn’t pitched for the Orioles this season. He appeared in six games with Triple-A Norfolk, leaving partway through his rehab to go on paternity leave, and allowed nine earned runs (10 total) and 14 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk and reliever Jose Espada to Double-A Chesapeake. Rodríguez went 0-for-7 with three walks and four strikeouts. Espada didn’t get into a game.
The Red Sox are starting left-handers Garrett Crochet and Connelly Early the next two days, which should get O’Neill in the lineup.
The Orioles haven’t posted today’s lineup.
Leody Taveras is a career .340 (18-for-53) hitter against the Red Sox, the highest average for any switch-hitter in a minimum 50 at-bats, per STATS.
Brandon Young makes his second start this season after tossing five scoreless innings in Chicago. He’s replacing Dean Kremer, who went on the 15-day injured list yesterday with a right quadriceps strain.
Twenty of the Orioles’ 25 games have been decided by three runs or fewer, most in the majors. It’s tied with the 1990 team for the second-highest total through 25 games, per STATS. The 1964 and 1957 teams are first with 21 games.
Boston right-hander Brayan Bello has allowed 14 earned runs (16 total) and 24 hits with 12 walks in 18 2/3 innings. His best start came in St. Louis, where he allowed two runs in 6 2/3.
Bello has made seven career starts against the Orioles and posted a 3.26 ERA in 38 2/3 innings. Adley Rutschman is 2-for-15 with a double. Gunnar Henderson is 5-for-19 with three doubles and a home run.
Roman Anthony batted .458 against the Orioles last season, the highest average for any rookie versus Baltimore this century in a minimum 20 plate appearances, per STATS.
The Red Sox are 9-16 and in last place in the American League East. They’ve lost three in a row and seven of their last 10.
Boston’s 14 home runs are tied with the Giants for fewest in the majors. A .223 average is 27th, a .305 on-base percentage is 26th and a .331 slugging is last. The 92 runs scored rank 26th.
The Red Sox have finished last in the AL in home runs twice in the past 90 years (1993 and 2017.)
The Orioles went 5-8 against the Red Sox last season. They were swept in a four-game series in August at Camden Yards and have lost six straight games against Boston in their home ballpark.
