Tyler O’Neill is unable to avoid the injured list in 2026.
The Orioles placed O’Neill on the seven-day concussion IL, retroactive to Thursday, and recalled outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez from Triple-A Norfolk.
Rodríguez was on the medical taxi squad this morning, with the assumption that he’d replace Ryan Mountcastle on the roster. Mountcastle injured his left foot last night while running out a double in the second inning. He had replaced Adley Rutschman in the lineup after the Orioles’ catcher went on the 10-day IL with left ankle inflammation.
Mountcastle and Rutschman underwent MRIs today. Mountcastle currently is maintaining his day-to-day status.
O’Neill was scratched from Friday’s lineup because he felt under the weather, according to the team, and didn’t play yesterday. He was out of today’s lineup.
The source of his concussion should be revealed after today’s game when the media speaks with manager Craig Albernaz.
O’Neill was 9-for-21 (.429) with two doubles and a home run in spring training and played for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. He was 7-for-29 (.241) with a home run and a .698 OPS in 10 games this season.
This is O’Neill’s fourth trip to the injured list since signing a three-year, $49.5 million contract before the 2025 season. He had neck, shoulder and wrist ailments last year. It’s his 18th time on the IL in his nine-year career and the second for a concussion, the first coming in April 2024 with the Red Sox.
Twelve Orioles are on the IL, tying the Diamondbacks for most in the majors.
The Orioles acquired Rodríguez from the Guardians on March 29 for minor leaguer Carter Rustad. He’s hit .176/.282/.304 in 44 major league games over the past two seasons, when Orioles manager Craig Albernaz was bench coach and assistant manager.
“He’s a really good coach,” Rodriguez said through interpreter Brandon Quinones. “I think this is a great organization. I think there’s a lot of talent here. I’ve really enjoyed my time in Triple-A with the guys, and I think there’s a good group here.”
Rodriguez was 8-for-24 with Norfolk.
