The 27-year-old Monell has spent his entire career in the Giants’ minor league system, but was designated for assignment earlier this week. In 641 games over seven minor league seasons, the left-handed batter has posted a .267/.351/.456 line. He has spent most of the past four seasons at Double-A and Triple-A.
He’s accumulated just nine plate appearances at the major league level. Monell has been added to the Orioles 40-man roster, which is now at 39 players.
The lefty-hitting Monell went 1-for-8 in eight games in September with the Giants.
Monell spent most of the 2013 season with Triple-A Fresno of the Pacific Coast League, batting .275 with 27 doubles, two triples, 20 homers and 64 RBIs in 121 games. He had a .364 on-base percentage, slugged .494 and had an OPS of .858. Monell hit .281 with an OPS of .888 against right-handed pitching.
A few minutes ago Monell tweeted this:
“New beginnings start in the city of Baltimore. Happy and blessed for my new opportunity. Grew up watching the AL East! Till then #swtp”
