The Orioles had six openings on their 26-man roster after today’s flurry of trades at the deadline. They narrowed it to five with one last transaction.
Left-hander Dietrich Enns was acquired from the Tigers for cash considerations, another move that apparently came just under the wire.
Enns, 34, made seven appearances with the Tigers this season, including a pair of starts, and allowed 11 earned runs and 12 total with 23 hits, four walks and 15 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings. The two starts came on June 26 and July 3, his first appearances with Detroit, and he had mixed results – five scoreless innings with one hit allowed against the Athletics and seven earned runs (eight total) and eight hits in four innings in D.C.
Four of his five relief appearances were scoreless. The exception came on July 24 against the Blue Jays, with four runs allowed in 1 1/3.
Enns made 14 starts with Triple-A Toledo this year and registered a 2.89 ERA in 62 1/3 innings. He walked 15 batters, struck out 71 and surrendered only four home runs.
The Orioles will use Enns out of the bullpen initially, giving them a third left-hander with Keegan Akin and Grant Wolfram, but he’s capable of hopping into the rotation later. Another reliever was needed with Andrew Kittredge traded to the Cubs.
The Yankees selected Enns in the 19th round of the 2012 draft out of Central Michigan, and he was traded to the Twins five years later with Zack Littell in exchange for Jaime García. He made two appearances with the Twins in 2017 and nine with the Rays in 2021.
Enns has registered a 4.30 ERA and 1.318 WHIP in his 18 major league appearances, including three starts. He’s also pitched in Japan and Korea and in independent ball. He’s out of minor league options.
The 40-man roster is down to 33 players with today’s moves.
Trevor Rogers will start Friday afternoon against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, and Tomoyuki Sugano starts Saturday.
Sunday’s starter is TBA.
Notes: The Orioles recalled reliever Yaramil Hiraldo and infielder Jeremiah Jackson to fill a couple of the roster vacancies.
Also, catcher Jacob Stallings elected free agency in lieu of accepting an outright assignment.
