Reliever Shawn Dubin has reported to the Orioles after a waiver claim from the Astros earlier this week. Roansy Contreras was designated for assignment to make room for him on the active roster.
The 40-man roster has 39 players.
Tough business. Contreras tossed 4 1/3 scoreless relief innings last night in his Orioles debut and is in limbo this morning.
"I'm very thankful to the Orioles organization for giving me the opportunity to be up in the big leagues and be here with them now,” he said last night. “So I'm very thankful for them.”
Contreras was the 65th player used by the Orioles this season. Dubin can become the 66th. Tyler Wells will be reinstated from the 60-day injured list when rosters expand and can become the 67th if someone doesn’t beat him to it.
Dubin is wearing No. 62. Reliever César Valdez was the last Oriole to wear it in 2020-21. The first was pitcher Radhames Liz in 2008-09.
The Orioles conclude their eight-game homestand this afternoon before flying to San Francisco. They've lost six of seven.
Left-hander Cade Povich is 2-7 with a 5.13 ERA and 1.430 WHIP in 17 games (15 starts). He’s faced the Red Sox twice this season and allowed four runs and nine hits with 14 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings.
Jarren Duran is 1-for-12 with a triple against Povich.
Povich averages 11.07 strikeouts per nine innings against the Red Sox, compared to 8.61 versus other teams, per STATS.
Coby Mayo has a .754 OPS against left-handers this season and a .515 OPS against right-handers.
Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet is 14-5 with a 2.38 ERA and 1.064 WHIP in 26 starts. He’s struck out 207 batters in 166 1/3 innings.
Crochet has allowed one run in seven innings in back-to-back starts, walking two batters and striking out 19. He shut out the Orioles over eight innings on April 2 at Camden Yards – the first of his 17 quality starts.
Left-handers are hitting .198 with a .555 OPS against Crochet and right-handers are hitting .222 with a .613 OPS.
Crochet has faced the Orioles four times in his career and allowed two runs in 16 innings. Ryan Mountcastle is 2-for-6 with a double.
