The Orioles have failed six times to extend a winning streak to four games, but they can win the series in Anaheim this afternoon and go 5-4 on their West Coast trip.

“Our guys have the same energy, the same work, prep, everything going into the game,” manager Craig Albenaz told the media after last night’s 5-1 loss. “It’s just getting over that hump. And obviously, offensively we couldn’t do anything tonight, so that didn’t help. It’s one of those things where we just have to keep on battling.”

They were victims of the reverse lock last night, being shut out on one hit over six innings by Ryan Johnson, who had allowed 19 runs and 23 hits in 13 1/3 over five games (two starts), with eight walks and five homers.

Blaze Alexander has returned to the lineup today, but Jackson Holliday remains on the bench after experiencing tightness in his groin.

Leody Taveras moves up to third in the order for the first time this season and second in his career.

Coby Mayo is the designated hitter. Samuel Basallo is catching.

Trey Gibson is making his seventh major league appearance and sixth start after registering a 5.81 ERA in 26 1/3 innings.

Gibson’s slider has been good against both left-handers (.125 average) and right-handers (.182).

The Orioles are two games back in the Wild Card and 10 ½ out of first place. They’re off Thursday before hosting the Nationals and White Sox.

Angels right-hander José Soriano is 8-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 16 starts, with 46 walks and 98 strikeouts in 92 innings. He began the season with one run allowed in his first six starts over 37 2/3 innings.

Right-handers are hitting .171/.270/.243 against Soriano this year. Left-handers are hitting .249/.349/.387.

Right-handers are hitting .150 against his fastball, and left-handers are hitting .365.

Soriano’s two career appearances against the Orioles came in relief and he allowed one unearned run and one hit in four innings.

Alexander is 2-for-5 with a double against Soriano.

The Angels are hitting .251 with two outs and runners in scoring position, the fourth-highest average in the majors. The Orioles have a .196 average that ranks 26th.
