The Orioles are back home tonight and trying to end an eight-game losing streak with Thomas Eshelman making his 2021 debut against the Blue Jays.

Eshelman had his contract selected today from Triple-A Norfolk, with Bruce Zimmermann placed on the 10-day injured list with left biceps tendinitis. Eshelman was 0-3 with a 6.41 ERA and 1.424 WHIP in six games (three starts) with the Tides.

With his last outing on June 10, Eshelman provides a fresh arm and also prevents the Orioles from shuttling another young prospect.

Eshelman’s three career appearances against the Jays have come in relief and he’s allowed seven runs and 16 hits in 11 innings.

Santander-Slides-into-Second-White-Sidebar.jpgAustin Hays is in right field tonight, Ryan Mountcastle is in left and Anthony Santander, playing on a sore left ankle, is the designated hitter.

Pedro Severino is catching.

Blue Jays left-hander Robbie Ray has posted a 3.45 ERA and 1.109 WHIP in 12 starts and is averaging 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings. But his 16 home runs are tied for the most surrendered in the American League.

Left-handers are slashing .189/.232/.340 against him this season.

Ray has made two career starts against the Orioles and allowed seven earned runs (eight total) and 14 hits with 15 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings.

Freddy Galvis is 8-for-24 versus Ray. Maikel Franco is 2-for-12 with a home run.

The Blue Jays have lost four games in a row and are in fourth place at 33-34, but they have a plus-43 run differential. They’re 20-18 on the road.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is batting .342/.444/.675 with 12 doubles, a triple, 22 home runs and 56 RBIs.
