Orioles and Braves lineups for Game 2 in Atlanta

Coby Mayo is out of the lineup today for the fourth game in a row, as the Orioles continue their series against the Braves in Atlanta.

Mayo came off the bench for one at-bat Tuesday night in Texas. He has 11 hits and eight RBIs in his last 37.

Tyler O’Neill is in right field for the first time since going on the injured list and missing almost two months. He was the designated hitter last night.

Ramón Laureano is the DH and cleanup hitter. Gary Sánchez is catching.

Dean Kremer has lowered his ERA to 4.27 in 17 games (16 starts). He tossed seven scoreless innings against the Rays in his last outing, and opponents have managed only two runs in 17 2/3 in his last three starts. He hasn’t surrendered a home run in his last seven starts.

The only career start for Kremer against the Braves resulted in one run allowed in six innings on May 5, 2023 in Atlanta.

Kremer recorded two strikeouts with his splitter over his first nine games and has 19 in his last eight, per STATS.

The Braves are using left-hander Aaron Bummer as an opener today. All 373 major league appearances over nine seasons have come in relief, including 28 this season. He made one start in the minors among his 97 appearances.

He last started a game on June 7, 2017 with Double-A Birmingham.

Bummer worked 2 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings on Wednesday against the Angels, retiring all seven batters on 24 pitches. He tossed 2 2/3 scoreless in his previous appearance at Citi Field and has surrendered a run in only two of his last 12 games.

Bummer, who spent his first seven seasons with the White Sox, is bringing a 2.86 ERA into the game, and he hasn’t given up a home run in 34 2/3 innings. He averages 0.5 per nine innings in his career.

Right-handers are batting .211 with a .623 OPS against Bummer this season and left-handers are batting .255 with a .652 OPS. But over his career, left-handers hit .215 with a .569 OPS and right-handers hit .244 with a .681 OPS.

Bummer has faced the Orioles 11 times and allowed 10 earned runs and 11 total in 7 1/3 innings. He’s surrendered 10 hits and walked nine batters.

The current Orioles don’t have many at-bats against him. Ryan O’Hearn is 2-for-2. Cedric Mullins is 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBIs.

Bummer ranks in the 91st percentile among pitchers in expected ERA (2.79), in the 97th percentile in groundball percentage (59.6) and in the 100th percentile in barrel percentage (1.1). He’s permitted only one ball hit off the barrel this season and just three in 249 batted balls over two seasons with the Braves.

Last night’s 3-2 win, featuring home runs from Mullins and Jordan Westburg, still has the Orioles 7 ½ games back for the last Wild Card. The Braves are eight back in the National League.

The Braves have lost six of their last eight games.

Mullins, who graduated from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga., is 5-for-17 with two homers in four career games at Truist Park. The ballpark is 32 miles from his school.

O’Hearn’s streak of not striking out ended last night at 20 plate appearances.
