Orioles and Giants lineups and notes for series finale

SAN FRANCISCO – The Orioles go for the series win this afternoon after prevailing yesterday for the second time in 10 games.

Gunnar Henderson is the designated hitter and Luis Vázquez is the shortstop. Dylan Beavers is in right field and Daniel Johnson starts in left. Ryan Mountcastle is at first base.

Tomoyuki Sugano get the start, his 26th, to close out the month. The Orioles are 11-16 in August.

Sugano, 35, has 10 victories and is on pace to be the oldest rookie in major league history to lead his team in wins. Jim Turner holds the record with 20 in 1937 at 34 years and 58 days, per STATS.

Samuel Basallo, who’s behind the plate today, is the third-youngest catcher to homer at 21 years and 17 days. The Rangers’ Iván Rodríguez is first at 19 years and 273 days, and the Mets’ Francisco Alvarez is second at 20 years and 319 days.

Jeremiah Jackson’s 29 hits are the second-most by an Oriole in his first calendar month behind Curtis Goodwin’s 37 in June 1995. It’s also the most by an American League player in his first month since Minnesota’s Kennys Vargas had 38 in August 2014, per STATS.

Jackson’s .330 average is the highest by an Oriole in his first 25 career games since Ryan Mountcastle hit .349 in 2020. He’s the third baseman today.

Jackson Holliday has drawn 18 walk this month. The only other players 21 or younger with that many walks in a month in the expansion era are Rickey Henderson and Mike Trout.

The Orioles have beaten their opponents by 10 or more runs six times this year, tied for second-most in the majors and four behind the franchise record set in 1996.

Also from STATS: The Orioles’ 21 multi-homer innings this season are tied with the Cubs for most in the majors.

Justin Verlander is 2-10 with a 4.47 ERA and 1.431 WHIP in 23 starts in his first season with the Giants and his 20th in the majors. He’s 10-6 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.191 WHIP in 25 career starts against the Orioles.
