ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Orioles and Rays meet in a three-game series that could jostle them within the division and wild card standings.
The Rays are a half-game ahead of the Orioles for third place in the American League East. The same distance that separates them in the wild card race, with the Orioles dropping out of a third-place tie last night.
The teams have split 16 games against each other, but the Orioles are 1-5 at Tropicana Field.
A big series awaits them.
Terrin Vavra is starting in left field tonight. Anthony Santander is the designated hitter.
Rougned Odor is starting at second base. He’s 8-for-19 with two doubles and three home runs against Corey Kluber.
Ramón Urías is starting at third. He’s 5-for-11 versus Kluber.
Austin Voth was pushed back to tonight. His first start with the Orioles came against the Rays on June 19 and he tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings with three hits and four strikeouts. He also had 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings on July 16 in St. Petersburg, started on July 25 after the All-Star break, and allowed one run and four hits with three walks in three innings.
Brandon Lowe hit a home run.
Kluber has faced the Orioles five times this season and allowed 12 earned runs (13 total) and 27 hits in 24 2/3 innings. He owns a career 3.49 ERA and 1.218 WHIP in 15 starts.
Cedric Mullins is 7-for-20 against Kluber. Austin Hays is 4-for-15 with two home runs. Santander is 5-for-14 with a double and home run.
