The Orioles are following a 7-3 homestand with a three-game series in Boston that starts tonight.
Samuel Basallo is the designated hitter and Tyler O’Neill is in right field. Coby Mayo is the third baseman and Blaze Alexander is at second.
Mayo’s .659 slugging percentage against left-handers this season ranks seventh in the majors among players with a minimum 40 plate appearances, per STATS. The Red Sox are starting southpaw Connelly Early.
Gunnar Henderson has a .564 career slugging percentage against the Red Sox, the sixth highest among active players with a minimum 150 plate appearances.
Shane Baz has allowed five runs in his last three starts covering 20 innings to lower his ERA from 5.48 to 4.48. He owns a 2.64 ERA and 0.717 WHIP in five career starts against the Red Sox. He’s allowed six runs in 17 2/3 innings in three starts at Fenway Park.
Jarren Duran is 2-for-14 against Baz.
The Red Sox have a .147 average versus Baz, the second lowest among pitchers in their first five career starts against them with a minimum 100 batters faced after Bo Belinsky’s .143, according to STATS.
Early has made 11 starts this season and posted a 2.95 ERA in 61 innings. He made an April 26 start at Camden Yards and allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings. Henderson and Basallo homered.
The Orioles are 6-13 against left-handers this season. They’re 0-7 on the road against division opponents and have never started a season 0-8.
The Red Sox went 8-5 against the Orioles last season, winning four of six games in Boston.
The series begins tonight with the Orioles two games ahead of the last-place Red Sox in the division. Boston is 9-19 at home and 16-14 on the road.
The Red Sox won two of three games at Camden Yards in April, but fired manager Alex Cora after a 17-1 victory.
The Orioles had 20 hits in a 10-3 win on April 24, their most against the Red Sox since they finished with 21 on Aug. 25, 2017.
