Chen has allowed 19 runs in the first inning, the most in any inning. He’s surrendered 14 in the third.
In 46 games in the leadoff spot, Markakis is batting .340 with 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 24 RBIs, 29 runs scored and an .891 OPS.
The Orioles made today’s roster moves official. They activated infielder Wilson Betemit from the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Xavier Avery, infielder Steve Tolleson and catcher Luis Exposito from Triple-A Norfolk.
Exposito will switch to No. 59. Avery will wear 70 and Tolleson will wear 6.
The Orioles are 6-6 against the Yankees this season (1-4 in Baltimore, 5-2 in the Bronx). They trail the all-time series, 430-529 (220-256 in Baltimore, 210-273 in the Bronx).
On this date in 1999, Albert Belle hit a two-run homer, his 30th of the year, and Doug Johns allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings in a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay. Remember those guys?
