Orioles claim Bruján and Ragsdale on waivers

The trade deadline left plenty of room for the Orioles to add players to their 26- and 40-man rosters. It’s a byproduct of being sellers. Lots of subtractions allow for future additions.

Two more moves came this afternoon while the Orioles played the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias claimed infielder/outfielder Vidal Bruján, 27, on waivers from the Cubs. He hasn’t reported but should join the Orioles in Philadelphia.

Elias also claimed right-hander Carson Ragsdale, 27, from the Giants, and the Orioles optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

The 40-man roster has increased to 37 players.

The Cubs designated Bruján for assignment on Wednesday. They acquired him from the Marlins on Dec. 29 for first baseman Matt Mervis and cash. He appeared in only 36 games and slashed .222/.234/.289 with three doubles and three RBIs.

The versatility is key for the Orioles after they traded Ramón Urías to the Astros. Bruján can play shortstop, second base, third base and all three outfield positions.

A corresponding move will be made after he reports. He’s out of options.

Ragsdale was a fourth-round pick by the Phillies in the 2020 draft out of the University of South Florida. He hasn’t reached the majors.

Ragsdale made 18 appearances, including 14 starts, with Triple-A Sacramento this summer and posted a 5.37 ERA and 1.515 WHIP in 65 1/3 innings. He has a 4.32 ERA and 1.336 WHIP in 81 games (75 starts) and averages 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Giants designated Ragsdale for assignment on Monday. They acquired him from the Phillies in a 2021 trade for reliever Sam Coonrad.

FanGraphs ranked Ragsdale as the Giants’ No. 13 prospect entering the season, and Baseball America had him 20th.

* The Orioles are starting Cade Povich, Dean Kremer and Trevor Rogers in Philadelphia. Povich will be reinstated from the injured list.

* Kyle Bradish started with Norfolk and allowed five earned runs and seven total with six hits, one walk and three strikeouts over three innings. He threw 57 pitches, 36 strikes.

* Interim manager Tony Mansolino told the assembled media that Ryan Mountcastle probably won’t join the team on Monday, adding that the first baseman’s hamstring is “great.”
