The Orioles have claimed infielder David Adams off waivers from the Cleveland Indians. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, left-hander Kelvin De La Cruz has been designated for assignment.
Adams, 27, appeared in 43 games for the New York Yankees in 2013, batting .193/.252/.286 with two homers and 13 RBIs. He made 38 starts in 2013, including 29 at third base, where he posted a .985 fielding percentage.
In 412 minor league games over six seasons, Adams is a career .291/.376/.441 hitter with 28 homers and 222 RBIs.
Adams has played first, second and third in the majors and minors. He could compete for a utility job and provide insurance at third if Manny Machado goes on the disabled list.
Adams was batting .281/.342/.313 in 17 exhibition games with the Indians.
De La Cruz allowed two runs and four hits over six spring innings, with four walks and three strikeouts.
Update: Speaking on the acquisition of Adams, who played his college ball at Virginia, Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said, “Adams is a versatile player who can play second base and third base, and is capable on-base hitter with some power.”
