The Orioles made a couple of moves this afternoon to improve their catching depth and open a spot on their 26-man roster.

Yohel Pozo was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals and the Orioles optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk. He arrives in the organization with Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo on the 10-day injured list.

Pozo, 29, is a right-handed hitter who appeared in 21 games with the Rangers in 2021 and didn’t get back to the majors until 2025 with the Cardinals. He’s a career .247/.273/.363 hitter in 106 games.

Pozo went 8-for-33 this season in 18 games. He’s thrown out 21.3 percent of runners attempting to steal in his career.

There’s some defensive versatility with Pozo, who also plays first base and has made one start at third base and one in left field in the minors. He’s also pitched six times in relief.

The Cardinals designated Pozo for assignment on July 17.

Outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez was optioned to Norfolk after Game 2 of yesterday’s doubleheader and the Orioles designated him for assignment today to make 40-man space for Pozo.

Rodríguez went 2-for-11 with double and two RBIs in seven games with the Orioles.

The Orioles returned left-hander Josh Walker to Norfolk last night after he served as the 27th man, and removing Rodríguez leaves their active roster short one player.

Left-hander Cade Povich was on the taxi squad and could be recalled to serve in a relief role. Grant Wolfram is the only lefty in the bullpen and the Orioles could use more length.

Also today, the Blue Jays claimed outfielder Rudy Martin off waivers from the Orioles.

*Left-hander Trevor Rogers will start Friday night against the Braves at Camden Yards. Brandon Young starts Saturday and Shane Baz Sunday.
