Orioles claim reliever Rico Garcia (plus other notes and O's lineup)

PHILADELPHIA – The Orioles are making another change to their bullpen, claiming right-hander Rico Garcia on waivers from the Mets this afternoon. He hasn’t reported.

Garcia appeared in six games with the Orioles in 2022 and allowed four runs in eight innings. He appeared in one game with the Yankees this season and allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings, and in eight with the Mets and surrendered three with 16 strikeouts in 12 2/3.

The 40-man roster has 38 players.

Dean Kremer registered a 7.04 ERA through April and had a 2.72 ERA in May, a 3.30 ERA in June and a 4.30 ERA in July. He’s registered a 2.89 ERA, 1.018 WHIP and .207 opponents’ average in nine home games and a 5.37 ERA, 1.464 WHIP and .294 opponents’ average in 13 road games.

Harrison Bader, who hit a big three-run homer in the sixth inning last night, is 3-for-6 with a double against Kremer.

Per STATS: Batters are slugging .259 against Kremer’s splitter since the beginning of June after posting a .500 mark through May.

Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker has made 12 starts among his 23 appearances this season. He’s posted an overall ERA of 3.82 with a 1.356 WHIP in 73 innings

Walker hasn’t completed six innings since his first start on April 3, when he shut out the Rockies on three hits. He’s registered a 4.78 ERA in 12 home games (six starts) and a 2.80 ERA in 11 road games (six starts).

The Orioles have experienced their share of struggles against him. Walker owns a career 2.77 ERA in 10 starts. The current group is 5-for-43.

Vidal Bruján is 2-for-4 with a home run. Alex Jackson is 2-for-6 with a homer.

Philadelphia’s starting pitchers have registered the third-lowest ERA in the majors at 3.40. The Orioles are 29th at 4.99.

* Tyler Wells starts tonight for Triple-A Norfolk in his second injury rehab game. He retired all six batters faced at Double-A Chesapeake.

Outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. begins his injury rehab assignment with High-A Aberdeen. Outfielder Vance Honeycutt was reinstated from the IronBirds’ IL.

Pitcher Alex Pham completed his rehab assignment and rejoined Double-A Chesapeake.

Blake Money tossed five scoreless innings today for the Baysox, allowing one hit and striking out six. Austin Overn collected his first Double-A hit.

* Second baseman Jackson Holliday is the Orioles’ winner of the prestigious Heart and Hustle Award, as chosen by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

The honor is presented annually to active players who “exemplify a true passion for the game and who best embody the values, spirit, and traditions of the game.” This is the only award in MLB that’s voted on by former players.

The overall winner will be announced in mid-November on MLB Network.
