The Orioles filled the last open spot on their 40-man roster today by claiming shortstop Luis Sardiñas off waivers from the Padres.
The roster is now full, but the Orioles must create a spot for Sardiñas on the 25-man. Paul Janish could be designated for assignment after the Orioles selected his contract on Sunday.
The Padres designated Sardiñas for assignment on Sunday after he batted .163/.226/.163 in 29 games. He’s out of minor league options.

Sardiñas, a switch-hitter from Venezuela, is a career .229/.278/.293 hitter in parts of four major league seasons with the Rangers, Brewers, Mariners and Padres. He turned 24 earlier this month.
Signed by the Rangers in 2009 as an amateur free agent, Sardiñas has been traded three times and now claimed off waivers since January 2015.
Sardiñas has played all four infield positions in the majors, including 82 games at shortstop. He made one appearance in left field.
“Sardiñas is young and has good skills to play shortstop,” executive vice president Dan Duquette wrote in a text message.
Ryan Flaherty is on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder and will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection within the next few days. He won’t be back for a while – 10 days is out of the question – and the Orioles wanted another utility infielder. They also have Robert Andino at Triple-A Norfolk.
As for today’s game, Chris Davis and Jonathan Schoop hit solo home runs off Jose BerrÃos in the seventh inning to reduce the Twins’ lead to 4-3.
J.J. Hardy drew a walk against Ryan Pressly, but Caleb Joseph grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
Davis has 209 home runs with the Orioles to tie Brady Anderson for seventh place on the club’s all-time list.
Alec Asher threw 24 pitches in two scoreless innings after replacing Chris Tillman. Does he still hold candidate status for Sunday’s start?
Today could be viewed as a side session.
Darren O’Day struck out the side in the eighth.
Tillman allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. He threw 104 pitches, 59 for strikes.
