Jurrjens signed with the Orioles on Feb. 15 after the Atlanta Braves declined to offer him arbitration. His contract was restructured, going from a major league to minor league deal, due to concerns about his knee following his physical.
Jurrjens allowed four runs and nine hits in 7 1/3 innings in two games with the Orioles, including one start. He was 5-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 14 starts at Triple-A Norfolk.
The Orioles had an opening on their 40-man roster after pitcher Freddy Garcia declined to be optioned to Norfolk and signed another minor league deal. However, that spot was handed today to outfielder Eric Thames, acquired from the Mariners organization for minor league infielder Ty Kelly.
Update: I forgot that Travis Ishikawa was designated yesterday and removed from the 40-man roster. Will need an explanation.
Down on the farm, Double-A Bowie knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Harrisburg. Gamboa threw 7 1/3 no-hit innings in his previous start.
I guess he’s getting the hang of it.
Gamboa threw 103 pitches today, 58 for strikes.
Nolan Reimold hit his first home run on his injury-rehab assignment. He’s scheduled to fly to Chicago with the Orioles on Monday.
Henry Urrutia picked up his first Triple-A RBI today with a 10-pitch bases-loaded walk that tied the game in the eighth inning. Russ Canzler followed with a three-run double.
