Brandon Young, the Orioles’ No. 19 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, makes his major league debut this afternoon against the Reds. He’s wearing No. 63.
Young’s 8.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio with Norfolk ranked third in Triple-A among pitchers with a minimum 15 innings.
The Orioles designated reliever Scott Blewett for assignment. Blewett, who’s out of options, allowed an unearned run and five hits in 4 1/3 innings, with one walk and six strikeouts.
Jordan Westburg, who’s in an 0-for-27 slump, is the designated hitter today.
Cedric Mullins is leading off, followed by Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman. Jackson Holliday is playing second base and Heston Kjerstad is in left field.
Ryan O’Hearn is batting .400 this season on two-strike counts. He’s playing first base, with Ryan Mountcastle on the bench.
The Orioles have struck out at least 11 times in six games this year, including three since Sunday. Their 15 strikeouts last night were the most since Sept. 17, 2024 against the Giants.
Cincinnati right-hander Hunter Greene has registered a 0.98 ERA and 0.578 WHIP in four starts with three runs, 12 hits, four walks and 31 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings.
The Orioles need a reverse lock.
In his last two starts, Greene has tossed 8 2/3 scoreless innings in San Francisco and seven against the Pirates. He held the Rangers to one run in seven innings on April 2.
The career splits don’t really matter. Left-handers hit .193 with a .645 OPS and right-handers hit .229 with a .713 OPS. Stack ‘em any way and hope for the best.
Greene started against the Orioles last season in Cincinnati and tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He’s never pitched at Camden Yards.
Henderson went 2-for-2 with a walk against him.
Greene hasn’t allowed a hit off his slider this season, per STATS. Left-handers are whiffing 59.3 percent of the time and right-handers are whiffing 51.4 percent.
