masn-baseballs-orioles.jpgThe Orioles’ brain trust will meet tomorrow during the off-day and decide whether to activate second baseman Brian Roberts from the 60-day disabled list before Tuesday night’s game against the Pirates at Camden Yards.

The club is expected to add Roberts to the 25- and 40-man rosters, but manager Buck Showalter and executive vice president Dan Duquette, among others, want to make sure he doesn’t experience any setbacks during today’s game with Triple-A Norfolk.

The club is expected to add Roberts to the 25- and 40-man rosters, but manager Buck Showalter and executive vice president Dan Duquette, among others, want to make sure he doesn’t experience any setbacks during today’s game with Triple-A Norfolk.

“I don’t know,” Showalter said. “I’m not sure how he felt physically last night. We haven’t gotten that complete return. He played for an extended period, and he’s supposed to play again today. After Sunday, that was the day we were going to sit down. We’ll probably talk on Monday because we don’t have anything scheduled minor league-wise after Sunday.

“As far as where he’s playing and what position he’s hitting and all that stuff, I haven’t made that lineup out yet.”

Robert Andino likely would revert to the super-utility role that Showalter once envisioned for him, getting starts at second base, shortstop and third base. He also could play left field.

“Let’s talk about that when it happens,” Showalter said. “I don’t want to, not jinx it, but it’s been such a long road for Brian, and more importantly, I really don’t want to address it yet, to be honest.

“There’s some good options. Robert’s been a guy that I’ve always felt comfortable playing anywhere. If Brian had been a little further along than this, I was going to try to play him a lot in the outfield in the spring. We talked about it. But we’ll continue to make use of Robert’s skills.

“I’m not 100 percent sure about the outfield – I’d be surprised – but I think Robert would be an above-average defender anywhere in the infield.”
