Orioles facing Ohtani tonight to begin Dodgers series

The Orioles went from missing Shohei Ohtani to facing him tonight to begin a three-game series against the Dodgers at Camden Yards.

Tyler Glasnow was scratched and Ohtani will make tonight’s start. He was scheduled for Monday.

Ohtani has a 4.18 ERA in 11 starts this season. He’s struck out 44 batters in 32 1/3 innings and surrendered only three home runs.

There's nothing wrong with the bat. Ohtani is hitting .279/.387/.606 with 20 doubles, eight triples, 46 home runs and 87 RBIs in 137 games.

The Orioles have faced Ohtani twice, during his time with the Angels, and scored nine runs over 12 innings.

Jeremiah Jackson is in right field, Emmanuel Rivera is at third base, Dylan Beavers is in left field and Samuel Basallo is catching. Ryan Mountcastle is the designated hitter.

Mountcastle is batting .307 with 14 RBIs and a .775 OPS in 22 games since his reinstatement from the injured list, and he’s posted a .286 average with runners in scoring position. He had a .247 average, 16 RBIs and a .644 OPS in 53 games before his hamstring strain, and he hit .175 with RISP.

The Orioles are averaging 6.7 runs per game against the National League West. They just swept the Padres and have won four of their last five games.

Dean Kremer is 9-10 with a 4.52 ERA in 27 games. He’s allowed 13 earned runs and 14 total with 16 hits over eight innings in his last two starts after tossing seven scoreless in Houston.

The Dodgers drafted Kremer in the 14th round in 2016 before packaging him in a 2018 deadline trade with the Orioles for Manny Machado. He’s made only one start against them, on July 19, 2023 at Camden Yards, and allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Kremer has a 3.26 ERA and 1.029 WHIP in 11 home games and a 5.53 ERA and 1.471 WHIP in 16 road games.

Glasnow missed over two months with shoulder inflammation, making his return on July 9. He’s allowed three runs or fewer in 12 of his starts. But he won’t pitch tonight.

The Orioles have improved their results against Glasnow. He was 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his first six career starts against them, but he’s allowed 14 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings in his last three outings.

The Dodgers were just swept by the Pirates in a three-game series in Pittsburgh and have lost five of their last six, but they lead the Padres by two in the NL West. They’ve gone 45-26 at home and 33-36 on the road.

They haven’t won a road series since the first weekend in August.

The Dodgers have been swept seven times this season, three more than in 2024. They had a 17-inning scoreless streak until the ninth inning Thursday.

The Orioles lost two of three at Dodger Stadium last summer and at Camden Yards in 2023 and 2019.

The Dodgers rank first in most player games lost to the injured list with 1,917, per STATS. The Orioles are fourth with 1,636.
